In Germany, instead of paying mandatory state pension contributions, doctors pay contributions to retirement benefit institutions specific to their profession. Ärzteversorgung Westfalen-Lippe (ÄVWL), an institution of the Ärztekammer Westfalen-Lippe, is one of Germany’s largest pension funds and has been providing retirement benefits for members of the Ärztekammer Westfalen-Lippe, and their surviving dependants, since 1960.

To achieve this, like every other post-employment benefit provider we have our own charter and statutes. All provident funds in Germany are the responsibility of the federal states, and ÄVWL is subject to the supervision of the Ministry of Finance of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Our principal goal is to ensure that our members in Westfalen-Lippe and their surviving dependants receive a solid and steady retirement provision. To achieve this goal we invest every possible effort. In close partnerships with experienced financial partners – we pursue a balanced and forward looking investment strategy, based on the solid investment pillars of “real estate” and “fixed income”. These investment segments lay the foundations for investments in more volatile assets such as equities.

This strategy has proved successful: our capital investment assets have almost doubled since 1996.
